TRAFALGAR DAY GUNS IN WOODBRIDGE
Woodbridge will echo to the sound of gunfire on Trafalgar Day, Saturday 22 October - even if it is provided only by the sound of drumming. Children will compose, rehearse and then play a piece of music based on the events of the battle.
Ian Heywood, a musician, composer and arranger, who is a seasoned leader of musical events for children, will lead two workshops. He says ‘There will no doubt be lots of work for the drums in imitating the sound of the big guns, but the composition will reflect the pathos and tragedy of the battle, as well as its excitement. We shall produce a CD of the two original compositions, and at the end of the sessions, parents will be able to hear their children play.’
The event will be held in the historic Shire Hall on the town’s Market Hill, with a session for 13-year-olds and above from 10.00 to 12.30, and one for 10 to 12-year-olds from 2.00 to 4.30. Places are free, and Ian stresses ‘The only qualification the kids will need is that they should be excited by music and be prepared to concentrate.’
They are invited to bring their own instruments, but Ian will provide a selection – including drums - for children who don’t have their own.
Numbers for each workshop are limited to 15, so parents should book early by telephoning Woodbridge Town Centre Coordinator Marion Wells on 0783 015 8780.
Refreshments will be provided free for the children, and parents can satisfy their appetites by lunching at The Galley Restaurant on Market Hill, which is sponsoring the event and which will be open for lunch on the day from noon to 2.00.
