The shield, together with a case of wine, was presented to Danish born Little Mermaid proprietor Lisbeth Dall by mayor Martin Sylvester, who had chosen the winners.

The awards are funded by estate agency Gobbitt and Kirby, whose principal, Scott Matheson-Barr, reckons the competition not only raises standards of display in the town during the Christmas shopping period, but also adds an element of fun.

Runner-up was Young Browsers children’s bookshop, and Alexander’s Menswear came third.
